This form serves a dual purpose; it acts as the formal invoice for the customer, and it is used to record the transaction in the journals.  This form should be prepared in triplicate by the F & I department from information obtained from the customer buyer’s order.  A copy should be provided to the customer, a copy filed in the car deal envelope, and a copy filed, in numerical sequence, by the accounting office.

In some states, the vehicle invoice is included as part of the sales tax or title application form.
